How to Prepare your Home and Family for a Hurricane

Hurricane Preparedness

Even though hurricanes are most active in the month of October, hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 in the Atlantic and from May 15 to November 30 in the Pacific.  Considering areas can be affected more than 100 miles inland, it is crucial to prepare your home and family for the event of a hurricane.

If a hurricane is tracking towards your area, all the members of your household should be involved in the planning and execution of a detailed emergency plan that includes an evacuation.  In addition to planning the details of an emergency evacuation, boarding up windows if your home is in close proximity to the coast and securing all outdoor items, one of the best ways to prepare is by having an emergency survival kit.  Not only will these survival tools keep you and your family safe if for some reason you aren’t able to evacuate, but many items can help you after evacuation as well.

Life Secure has put together a list of items you should have in your emergency evacuation kit:

Midland WR120B All Weather Emergency NOAA Radio

This radio tunes to the U.S. Government’s All-Hazard 24/7 alert system and activates automatically to alert you of severe natural or man-made disasters.  Every home should have at least one NOAA alert radio.

WaterBasics Disaster & Emergency Drinking Water Pump and Filter Kit

The Emergency water filter pump provides safe drinking water in minutes.  Not only does it protect against bacteria and has virus removal but it provides peace of mind and the perfect solution for drinking safe water.

Sherpa 100 Emergency Solar Power Kit by Goal Zero

This ultra-portable unit allows you to power laptops, tablets, cell-phones and more.  It’s paired with durable solar panels for endless power and ensures the items you use to stay updated on the storm, contact family members and local authorities stay charged.

[2-Person] Bug-Out-Roller 3-Day Emergency Evacuation Survival Cart

Not only does this personal evacuation cart help to quickly evacuate but also allows you to rest (integrated top seat and gear platform) when traveling or waiting for assistance.  The contents include sanitation and hygiene items such as toilet paper rolls and EZ disposable towels. Also included area first aid kit and guidebook in addition to tools such as a 14-in-1 multifunction tool (needle nose pliers, wire cutter, knife blade, etc)

Luminaid Inflatable PackLite Max 2-in-1 Emergency Lantern and Phone Charger

If your family is stranded in a storm, this 150 lumens waterproof Solar Lantern can not only brighten up a dark space but it also can charge mobile devices at the same speed as wall outlets.  In addition to the high-efficiency solar panels, the PackLite Max Phone Charger can also be quickly charged through a USB port.

We can’t stop the forces of mother nature but there are certainly ways to brave the storm with preparation.  You can prepare your home by turning off your power if you see flooding and downed power lines. You can lower the thermostat in your refrigerator and freezer to the coolest possible temperature that way if your power goes out, your food will stay fresh longer.  But what’s most important is having an emergency survival kit and other survival tools available and ensuring the ones you love are safe and comfortable.
